STEP into Nursing Summer Bridge Program

The purpose of the Summer Transition to Excellence Program, “STEP Into Nursing,” is to ease the transition from high school to college in first-time college students, specifically focused on underrepresented populations in nursing. 

Nursing defines underrepresented populations as students who are first generation college students, minority in race/ethnicity, male gender, demonstrating financial need, or residing in a rural county in Alabama. 

STEP aims to introduce students to academic support programs and services, create a social community among pre-nursing students at Auburn, and narrow course-completion performance gaps for students from underrepresented populations.

STEP Into Nursing is a program that starts as a bridge program during the summer and extends into the students’ first semester at Auburn. During the summer program, students build community and social belonging with one another and upper-division nursing students by participating in activities like bowling, scavenger hunts, movie nights, small-group dinners and more. 

They experience hands-on activities that solidify their career choice in nursing by working in the College of Nursing’s skills and simulation labs. Students are exposed to on-campus resources that build a foundation for success in their first semester at Auburn. 

Support for students in STEP continues throughout the fall term. They are enrolled in a success strategies course that prepares them for areas such as time-management, study skills, professional communication and more! Community-building activities and experiences with nursing students and faculty are offered periodically during the semester.

STEP provides the opportunity to have sound advice, mentorship, community and foundational academic skills necessary to be successful in college and nursing school.
