Protect Alabama Waterways

Wherever you live in Alabama, you have a river, lake, bay, or bayou nearby. From the Tennessee River to the Gulf, we are known for our beautiful waters. They’re central to our weekend getaways and summer vacations. They’re destinations for some of the country’s top fishermen. And they are known worldwide for some of the richest aquatic biodiversity on the planet.

But sadly, many of our waters could be at risk. They could be contaminated with E. coli and other bacterial and chemical pollution, making our rivers, lakes and bayous harmful for both recreation and wildlife. Due to lack of funding, state agencies are able to monitor less than a fifth of these waters.

Alabama Water Watch, part of the Auburn University Water Resources Center, fills that void.

Alabama Water Watch trains citizen volunteers to help protect the waters we love by testing local lakes, rivers and streams for pollution. Water Watch volunteers have helped identify, clean up and preserve dozens of areas throughout the state. But there are still many waters that are not being monitored – and you can help us make sure those waters are safe.

Your gift today will help us recruit and train new volunteers and supply current volunteers. With new volunteers and supplies, we can activate new areas for regular monitoring or re-activate orphaned areas – waters that once were monitored regularly, but now are not due to lack of funding.
